புதுடில்லி: ஸ்ரீபெரும்புதூர் உட்பட, எட்டு இடங்களில், இந்தாண்டுக்குள் விமான நிலைய பணிகளை துவங்க, மத்திய அரசு இலக்கு நிர்ணயித்து உள்ளது.

With the proposed greenfield airport at Sriperumbudur finding a place in the PM’s list of infra targets for 2013-14, Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman V P Agrawal said that if the State obliges, this airport “could be completed even before the one in Navi Mumbai”. Agrawal explained that the ground was flat and ideal for constructing an airport, unlike in Navi Mumbai which will require more levelling work. The PM’s report also outlined the fact that just like the existing Chennai airport in Meenambakkam, even this one will be modelled along the Public-Private-Participation (PPP) model. “This is ideal for us, but we are also constrained by the fact that there will be opposition,” he said. On the the ongoing privatisation of the existing airport, he said, “we have had a lot of concerns after we privatised Delhi and the CAG has pointed out a whole list of problems that we have to fix. So we are going slow and steady with this airport.”
He confirmed that the tender process for taking charge of the existing terminal was far from starting. The proposal for the greenfield airport, proposed to be spread across 5,000 acres with a budget of Rs 20,000 crore has been pending with the state government for the greater part of a year now. “From our side we can only look at the modality and facilitate the tender process, but unless the state decided to act nothing can happen with the project,” he told Express over phone. Agrawal, along with the Civil Aviation Secretary had met the Chief Secretary twice in the last six months. “I have been told that Madam (Jayalalithaa) is considering the proposal, so we are hopeful that there will be some movement with the project soon,” added Agrawal. The need for a second airport in Chennai was because the growth in passenger and cargo traffic was expected to boom over the next decade. “I am certain that the current terminals will not be able to handle the growing traffic for more than 6-7 years. If we don’t start the second airport building process now, it will become very difficult,” he pointed out. The good news is that even though the new airport will become a reality soon, the existing Kamaraj Domestic Terminal will not be put to waste. As AAI was planning to turn it into warehousing space, Air Asia plugged for space to build a regional office inside the terminal and have been allotted one-fourth of the terminal to work with.
